China in Africa’s EVs Revolution
Analyzing how China’s industrial policies and export strategies are reshaping African vehicle markets—and the risks, opportunities, and strategic choices this creates for African countries.
As China’s auto industry faces domestic overcapacity and intensifying competition, African and other Global South markets are increasingly becoming an outlet for ultra-low-cost Chinese vehicles. In countries like Ethiopia, cheap Chinese EVs combined with favorable policy environments are accelerating electrification at unprecedented speed. But this rapid shift raises urgent questions.
This project examines the depth and drivers of Chinese vehicle penetration across key African markets, the role of policy in shaping these dynamics, and the strategic implications for Africa's own EV ambitions, industrial development, and long-term mobility systems.
