Bessie Noll

Bessie Noll is a Fellow at the African Tech Futures Lab. She serves as a senior researcher and lecturer at the Energy and Technology Policy Group at ETH Zürich, where her work examines public policy and energy transition issues, with a focus on low-carbon transport, clean technology competition, and the role of policy in shaping clean energy markets across the Global North and South. She is especially interested in how public policy can accelerate these transitions and in advancing analytical tools and theoretical frameworks that support policymakers in navigating them. Her work has been published in high visibility journals such as Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability, Joule, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Bessie holds a PhD in Energy and Technology Policy from ETH Zürich, as well as a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Systems and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. She was born and grew up in Japan and has played competitive baseball/softball for much of her life, playing four years of D1 softball for the Stanford Cardinal and competed for Team USA in two Woman’s Baseball World Cups.
