Joel Nana serves as Research Director at the African Tech Futures Lab.  He is also a Senior Manager at Sustainable Energy Africa in Cape Town and a Fellow at the Energy for Growth Hub. His work  spans grid integration of distributed energy resources, urban energy modeling & planning, and electric mobility—always with a strong emphasis on capacity-building for African policymakers. His work has been featured in major media outlets including The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, and he was a 2024 resident at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center. 

Joel holds a Ph.D. from the Energy Systems Research Group at the University of Cape Town, an MSc in Applied Physics, and a BEng in Electrical Engineering.
