Africa’s CDR Future

Assessing the feasibility, risks, and development implications of carbon dioxide removal in African contexts.

As carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies gain momentum globally, Africa is emerging as both a potential host and key stakeholder in their deployment. Yet the continent’s CDR opportunities—spanning approaches like biochar, enhanced rock weathering, and direct air capture—remain poorly understood, often accompanied by overstated claims and underexamined trade-offs.

Through research synthesis, stakeholder engagement, and targeted case studies, the project will help African and global decision-makers evaluate which CDR pathways align with both African development priorities and global climate goals.
